<p>You smell so good. Surely one of the most flattering compliments you can hear, right? I mean, it&#8217;s better than one my twelve year old gave me recently, which was Mum, you always smell of onions. Yes, that&#8217;s because I&#8217;m always cooking the dinner. Day after day. But I took the hint, not only because I really do prefer to smell amazing, but because it&#8217;s so rare to take a few hours to focus on doing something for the sheer enjoyment of it. </p>

<p>Enter Karen, founder of Karen Timson Fine Fragrance and lifelong scent aficionado, who has made it her mission to create beautiful, ethereal perfumes that tell a story &#8211; fragrances with a delicate, watercolour-feel – detailed and subtle. Drawing inspiration from a variety of sources including myth and legend, her travels around the world and her own, fertile imagination, Karen’s fragrances combine balance with wearability, and modernity with old-fashioned quality, with with names evocative of myths and fables, travel and nature. </p>

A proud Northants biz at the heart of the local food and drink scene, <a href="https://wharfdistillery.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Wharf</a> produce amazing English whisky, gin, rum, vodka, brandy, liqueurs and aperitifs that we can&#8217;t get enough of, and they&#8217;ve created a stylish boutique event space with a vintage industrial vibe that works absolutely perfectly for conjuring up gorgeous scents whilst sipping on an Old Silson G&amp;T. </p>

<p>There&#8217;s a lot to learn when it comes to perfume making, so prepare to put your thinking caps on. Did you know, for example, that humans have up to 450 olfactory receptors in their nose? Or that perfume originated in the temples of Egypt around 5000 years ago? Is there anything the Egyptians didn&#8217;t invent? Karen has a huge amount of wisdom to impart when it comes to the history and science of the fragrances we know and love today. The wonderfully indulgent thing about this workshop though, is the bit where you get to spend three whole hours sniffing beautiful scents and finding out how they work when you mix them together. Being transported by fragrances to a moment in time as you attempt to conjure up something resembling White Musk from the 80s, CK One from the 90s or, my current scent obsession, Eidesis by Aesop (by the way, M&amp;S Apothercary&#8217;s Warmth is a great dupe of this). </p>

<p>There&#8217;s plenty of time to play around, make mistakes and figure out what you like, with twenty different scents to choose from. My first attempt resulted in what Karen described as Terry&#8217;s Chocolate Orange. Now that may well be my favourite thing on the planet, but I&#8217;m not too sure that I actually want to smell of it, so I went back to the drawing board and, using the same fragrances I&#8217;d picked out originally, I tinkered around with the proportions until I found something that worked. Base, middle and top notes perfectly in balance.</p>



<p>Now, I don&#8217;t like to brag, but Karen actually described it as sophisticated and expensive-smelling, so next time you see me please compliment me on how good I smell, because I will be wearing it every day (to mask the smell of onions). A warm blend of Cedramber, Ambroxan, Iso E Super and slight hints of Lavender, Orange oil and Patchouli, there are a few other secret ingredients chucked in for good measure. Guys, I&#8217;m not giving away my formula, if you want to get your hands on a bottle, <em>Muddy Stilettos The Fragrance</em> is going to be in production just in time for Christmas gift guides. </p>

<p>No, this is for over 18s only &#8211; guys you&#8217;re blending alcohol based fragrances in a distillery, leave the kids at home.  </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-dog-friendly">DOG FRIENDLY?</h2>



<p>Not in the distillery, you wouldn&#8217;t want Fido to lap up all the rum now, would you? </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-accessibility">ACCESSIBILITY</h2>



<p>Everything is on the ground floor, so if you need level access you&#8217;re in luck.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-muddy-verdict">THE MUDDY VERDICT</h2>



<p><strong>Good for</strong>: Anyone who loves things that smell nice &#8211; so everyone &#8211; and, if you feel like you deserve to dedicate a bit of time to yourself, then this workshop really is the perfect way to relax and indulge in way that you possibly wouldn&#8217;t do ordinarily. </p>



<p><strong>Not for</strong>: It&#8217;s not a raucous night out. It&#8217;s definitely fun (and gin can always be involved), but in a calm way, so whilst this would be the perfect way to spend an evening with your girlfriends, you do need to concentrate a wee bit. </p>
