<p>Ready for more brooding atmosphere? <em>Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man </em>has landed in cinemas and will be available to stream on Netflix on 20 March. Yes, we’ll absolutely be seated – front row, coat still on, pretending we’re here for the cinematography. And it’s not just because Oscar-winner (and professional smoulderer) Cillian Murphy is back. Although let’s be honest, that doesn’t hurt. The trailer delivers exactly what you’d hope for: tense, dramatic, and dangerously cool. Expect soot-stained streets, clattering factories, and razor-sharp suits. Even better, Northants and Leics both play a starring role, with the spooky backdrop of Kelmarsh Tunnel, as well as nearby Calke Abbey (technically over the border in Derbishire but as near as dammit), both firmly in the spotlight.</p>

<p>Tommy Shelby is back. So, grab your flat-caps and dust off your tweed, there’s going to be a whole lot more industrial noir with a side of aristocratic menace, and this time round it’s all happening right on your doorstep. Convenient – and slightly intimidating.</p>



<p>Does it get any spookier than Kelmarsh Tunnel? Hidden away in rural Northants, this disused railway tunnel on the former Northampton to Market Harborough line is a perennial favourite with runners and cyclists. Head torch recommended as there is <em>very</em> little natural light, adding particularly eerie vibe to the site. <em>Peaky Blinders</em> Director Tom Harper has said the tunnel was “one of those treasures you sometimes find when you’re filming&#8221; with the tunnel’s enclosed nature lending a brooding atmosphere to the production.</p>



<p>First opened in 1859, the tunnel forms part of the Brampton Valley Way, a linear park which runs from the outskirts of Northampton to Little Bowden near Market Harborough, on the former railway line. <h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-calke-abbey">CALKE ABBEY</h2>

<p>Cue: mist rising between redbrick buildings and an overgrown courtyard thick with tension as Cillian Murphy’s silhouette emerges in a slow, swaggering stride from the stables at Calke Abbey, which is within touching distance of Leicestershire &#8211; quite honestly I&#8217;ve always thought is was in Leics, silly old me.</p>



<p>Dubbed the ‘unstately home’, Calke remains little restored, so was the perfect choice for portraying a period when country houses faced dramatic decline. The production team selected Calke for its ‘extraordinary authenticity’, filming both inside the house and on the wider estate. Calke’s seemingly-abandoned spaces, peeling paintwork and layered interiors offered the filmmakers an atmospheric backdrop that required almost no alteration – with key scenes shot in the ground-floor passageways, Kitchen, Schoolroom and Night Nursery, where the wartime setting seems to rise naturally from the fabric of the building.</p>

<p>Beyond the house, the historic redbrick Stableyard and Riding School underwent a more dramatic transformation. Set dressing, atmospheric lighting and the arrival of a vintage car reshaped the spaces into a moody, cinematic world that feels a world away from everyday Calke. The Stableyard also became the backdrop for the now-iconic Tommy Shelby walk you can see in the trailer (above).</p>



<p>Bringing this world to life required meticulous preparation behind the scenes. Calke’s Collection team worked closely with the production to protect the site’s historic environment, ensuring filming could take place safely within such fragile spaces. More than 1,300 historic objects were carefully packed, moved and reinstated by the team in a process that took over 950 hours. Artificial frost and snow effects were used during filming, although an unexpected early snowfall provided its own continuity challenge – particularly for scenes shot through the Schoolroom windows (Tommy Shelby’s writing room), where winter weather appeared earlier than planned.</p>

<p>The Peaky Blinders series followed a Birmingham street gang navigating the messy aftermath of World War I. There’s everything from battling rival gangs, power plays, all while juggling family loyalty, doomed love lives, and, of yes, a steadily encroaching fascist society. Basically, your classic period crime drama but with better cheekbones.</p>



<p>The film, meanwhile, shift gears and drops us into World War II, following Brummie mob boss Tommy Shelby as he returns to a bombed-out Birmingham. He’s swiftly pulled into secret missions and forced to confront his own brutal past – emotionally, morally and presumably in an impeccable coat. And honestly? With over a sharp 7 million viewers tuning in for the fifth series, we’re expecting higher stakes, darker demons and even more intense brooding.</p>

<p>While much of the rest of the filming takes place up North in Liverpool, the crew never strays far from the Midlands. Enter The Black Country Living Museum, otherwise known as Peaky Blinders HQ. The museum’s purpose-built village is basically a period-drama cheat code, serving up an effortlessly authentic backdrop of industrial-era shops, houses, and workshops. It’s doubled for everything from the Canal Street bridge, to Charlie Strong’s scrap yard, and the St James’ School. It’s a crucial historical setting that nail’s the show’s smoke-choked, brick-heavy aesthetic – the kind that makes you feel underdressed if you’re not wearing a flat cap. <h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-digbeth-loc-studios-birmingham"><a href="https://digbethlocstudioslimited.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Digbeth Loc Studios</a>, Birmingham</h3>



<p>Quietly strut over to Digbeth Loc Studios, the film’s new main production base right here in Birmingham. A number of scenes and interior sets were shot here, and it’s already played a starring role in creator Steven Knight’s bigger plan to supercharge film and TV production across the West Midlands production – so watch this space. As for Dibgeth itself? The area is drenched in street art, layered with industrial heritage, and threaded through with canals – giving that effortlessly gritty, industrial atmosphere without even trying.</p>

<p>Cameras were spotted along the canals near Gas Street Basin. Ahead of shooting, boats dressed head-to-toe in Twenties finery were moored outside the Verve Bar, transforming the stretch of canal into something straight out of the Shelby world – tragically, without an actual Shelby in sight. Eagle-eyed spotters clocked several boats getting camera-ready, including Thomas Coathupe &amp; Sons Ltd and WGE Wyrely &amp; Essington – adding a welcome smidge more of industrial-era authenticity. Proof, if needed, that Birmingham’s canals don’t need much dressing up to look cinematic – just the occasional period boat and a missed opportunity to spot&nbsp;<em>the</em>&nbsp;man himself.</p>
