Boughton House, Geddington

A truly grand stately home that takes inspiration from the Palace of Versailles, Boughton is one of Northamptonshire’s hidden gems with exquisitely landscaped gardens and palatial state rooms.

Approaching across the vast parkland (there’s over 11 thousand acres of estate in total), the public entrance is somewhat deceptive. Whilst it is obviously grand, the uninitiated visitor might not quite grasp how spectacular this place really is until they round the corner to stand in front of the picturesque colonnades and the restored 18th century Grand Etang, a shimmering pond with its 75ft plume of water, reflecting the the perfectly manicured grounds.

Beyond, the eye is led towards tree-lined avenues and perfectly symmetrical water features and then, hiding from view within the landscape, is Orpheus, a 20ft deep inverted pyramid created in 2009 by artist Kim Wilkie.

Once a somewhat more modest in scale Tudor manor, it was Ralph, the first Duke of Montague in the 17th century, who transformed Boughton into the grand seat it is today, adding formal State Rooms with parquet de Versailles flooring, French tapestries and sumptuously painted ceilings that visitors can marvel at today. There is also a lovely art space and a café within the former stable block and an impressive (if slightly scary) armoury.

If you’re on the hunt for a unique and genuinely spectacular wedding or event venue, Boughton will knock your socks off. There are a number of rooms to choose from including the Great Hall and the Tapestry Suite, which is a light and airy space with exposed beams and brickwork. You’ll be in great company, Eddie Redmayne and Amanda Seyfried tied the knot here, well in character as Marius and Cosette in Les Mis and Joaquin Phoenix called the old place home in his role as Napoleon, so, if it’s epic you’re looking for, you’ll be sure to find it here.
